That was the last time. Since then, I know every trick frequent flyers use. Now you will too.
1. Know the Real Ryanair Cabin Bag Size
Official size: 40x30x20 cm. Reality? According to TripAdvisor discussions, the actual bag sizers measure 42x20x30 cm. Two extra centimeters in two directions. Sounds small, makes a difference.
This Ryanair hand luggage trick works because the sizer frames themselves have tolerance. My Fjällräven Kånken Laptop 15"? Doesn't fit the official size. Fits every real sizer I've tested: Frankfurt, Cologne, Palma.
But don't push it. Dublin, Stansted, and Bergamo are notorious for strict checks. They measure every centimeter there.
2. The Travel Pillow Trick (Use Carefully)
The classic: Roll clothes into a sweater and wear it like a neck pillow. Frommer's made this go viral. Millions of TikTok views.
But Ryanair knows the trick too. Since 2023, they've publicly warned against it. A friend of mine had to check his "pillow" in Dublin. 46 euros, plus the shame in front of the entire queue.
I'd only do this if I'm feeling bold and know the airport.
3. Use Duty-Free Bags
Duty-free purchases are allowed on top of your hand luggage. Officially.
The trick: Buy a Toblerone for 3.50 euros after security. Use the large duty-free bag for T-shirts, charging cables, whatever. Works as long as the bag still looks somewhat like airport shopping.
Stuff it with socks and you'll get caught. Subtlety is everything.
4. Best Ryanair Baggage: Soft Over Hard
Wheeled luggage attracts attention. The hard edges, the click-clack of wheels. Gate staff spot them from 20 meters away.

5. Wear Your Heavy Clothes
Your bulkiest coat, heavy shoes, cargo pants with stuffed pockets. Everything you wear doesn't count as luggage.
Yes, you'll look like the Michelin Man on a June flight to Mallorca. Yes, you'll sweat during boarding like a marathon runner. But you won't pay 46 euros. That's the trade-off.

7. Priority Only for Longer Trips
All six Ryanair hand luggage tricks above? They save you fees. But sometimes Priority Boarding is worth it anyway.
The question "Is Ryanair Priority worth it?" depends on your trip length. Priority starts at 9.49 euros. According to AirHint, only 95 of 189 seats can book it. That means: Every other flight has Priority sold out before you can even book.
For a weekend trip? Usually unnecessary. For 5+ days with the 55x40x20 cm trolley? Worth it.
